8 major summer wedding trends
When planning something as significant as a wedding, it can be overwhelming knowing where to start. With wedding fashion, some things stay timeless, but as more and more couples inject their personality into their big day, trends are changing rapidly. We take a look at some of the top current summer wedding trends.
’70s vibes
A major interiors trend has trickled over into wedding décor and isn’t going away! The ’70s-inspired aesthetic has become a really popular style, especially for couples looking for a more boho wedding theme. Think rattan furniture, pampas grass, crochet decorations and mismatched Moroccan rugs to make your aisle. Dreamy!
Vibrant colours
One of the joys of summer weddings is the huge range of colours that look fantastic. Bright, colourful flowers such as sunflowers mixed in with bright reds and purples look wonderful and vibrant, or if you prefer more muted colours, the rich blush pink and copper colour palette isn’t going anywhere, and looks fantastic mixed in with the ’70s aesthetic mentioned above.
Bespoke embroidery and experimental styles
Brides are looking to make their special dress as unique possible, and one major trend creeping through is bespoke embroidery on the dress or veil. It could be your wedding date, or a meaningful quote discreetly sewn into your outfit, adding a truly special and personal detail.
A key trend for summer weddings is more adventurous dress styles for brides and bridesmaids. From bridal separates to capes, or jumpsuits and playsuits for bridesmaids, bridal party fashion is more flexible and modern than ever. These trends are a great way to style mix and match bridesmaids (another key trend) and give your bridesmaids an outfit that reflects their personal style.
Long banquet tables
One thing that is guaranteed to give a couple a headache in the build-up to their wedding is the seating plan. Making the numbers work to a fixed layout whilst navigating family politics can take hours. Lots of couples have started opting for long banquet tables, which also look fantastic at outdoor summer weddings. They make a real visual impact and you can choose to have no top table or seating plan and just let your guests sit where they like and make it super relaxed.
Eco-friendly favours
As couples become more conscious of the impact their wedding could have on the environment, the more they are turning to favours for their guests that are still thoughtful, but won’t end up in a landfill. Some of the more popular options are individual packets of seeds so guests can grow their own flowers at home and remember the couples’ special day, or edible favours such as homemade limoncello or biscuits. (Make sure you check your venue’s policy on bringing food and drink items in!)
Quirky confetti alternatives
Following on from eco-friendly favours, another big summer wedding trend is fun alternatives to confetti. While there are some fantastic biodegradable confetti out there, popular alternatives include bubbles, handmade streamers with colourful ribbons or balloons that are later used as décor in the reception venue. This is one trend you can be really playful with!
Experiential entertainment
A big trend for summer weddings, especially when held outside, is experiential entertainment placed around the venue space that your guests can explore and discover for themselves.
Think tarot card readings, sketch artists, glitter bars and even magicians. Another big trend is for live music to be a feature throughout the whole day rather than just the evening party, so consider a band who can provide acoustic music for your ceremony, fun background music and entertainment during your drinks, and dance floor favorites for your after-dinner party! As weddings move forward, entertainment is an area where you can really pick something unique that reflects you and your partner.
DIY décor
With all the new skills lots of people have gained in lockdown, DIY will still be a heavy feature at weddings. From homemade cakes to creative signs, a personal touch will still be popular for summer weddings. If you’re not a confident crafter, don’t forget DIY can be as simple as finding quirky items such as bathtubs and wheelbarrows and filling them with ice and drinks for your guests to help themselves to; it’s still a talking point using simple creative skills!
The biggest trend moving forward for weddings is personality and steering away from formal tradition. Taking inspiration from our top trends will help you and your partner create a day that reflects your personality, style, and is most importantly lots of fun and unique!
