As the heart-melting duet by P!nk and Willow Sage Hart suggests, after a very locked-down year, many of us are desperate to get out there this summer to “cover me in sunshine, shower me with good times”. So what are the spring and summer fashion trends we should be modelling when we get back out there to ‘Smile’ with Katy Perry, eat an ‘Ice Cream’ with Blackpink and Selena Gomez or dance under the ‘Midnight sky’ with Miley Cyrus?
The pandemic has changed the way we live and work and has given us time to really think about what’s important to us and our impact on the world. All of this has had a big influence on fashion design, with sustainability now a key focus for the fashion industry and glamour and sparkle teaming with comfort and a chilled-out summer vibe. Read on to find out more about some of the biggest fashion trends of spring/summer 2021.
Sustainable fashion
A positive outcome of the pandemic is an increased awareness of our impact on the planet and what changes can be made in the fashion industry in order to make a difference. Certified organic cotton along with other sustainable, recycled or reclaimed fabrics are all taking centre stage in the fashion world this season.
Sparkle on that dance floor
Sequins and shiny fabric lit up the catwalk this spring/summer, so celebrate meeting up with loved ones with a suitable amount of sparkle and shine. Team a metallic skirt with sneakers and a plain T-shirt or a sequinned bralette with high waisted shorts and bare feet for a relaxed, no-effort, glamorous look. And when nightclubs reopen, belt out those lady songs with your girlfriends and give that disco ball a run for its money.
Corset cuties
If you’d like to leave those baggy comfort clothes behind, then be inspired by the sweetest rapper on the scene, Saweetie, and lace-up that corset this season. Combine with a full length, layered skirt for ultimate glamour or team with close-fitting shorts for a simple, stylish silhouette.
Get your bra on
Mooching around the house during lockdown often meant that bras were left unloved at the bottom of underwear drawers, but this spring and summer, bralettes are a key fashion item. So let’s get our bras on and give them the love they deserve! Team with shorts, high waisted trousers or layer over dresses or tops. Just add a cardigan or blazer when the weather is less than tropical.
Floss that midriff
Flossing is no longer just for your teeth, it’s also for your midriff, with bralettes, crop tops and dresses sporting cross over straps to decorate your skin. Or if you’d rather bare less flesh, maybe opt for some shoulder straps, back straps or drawstring details instead.
Back open
If you’d prefer to show off your back rather than your midriff, then you could opt for a backless dress instead. Choose from a variety of styles, from full and floaty to slim and figure-hugging. Whatever you choose, you’ll be ready for all your favourite social hangouts to be back open.
Maximum glamour
After numerous lockdowns and too much wine and homemade cake, many of us would rather keep our flesh fully covered. Be inspired by Olivia Rodrigo’s stunning Dior red floaty maxi dress, worn at the 2021 Brit Awards, and glamorously float to your social events feeling confident and beautiful (& covered).
Monochrome mingling
Monochrome is a popular style this season with black and white separates, dramatic stripes or chequerboard patterns creating a simple, elegant look. Finish the outfit off with a classic string of white pearls or diva-inspired black lace-up shoes.
Stylish comfort
Not quite ready to completely leave the comfy, mooching-around-the-house look behind? Fashion designers totally understand this and there are many fashion styles this spring/summer that means you can rock that chilled out, relaxed look. Long, elegant, baggy trousers are very on-trend this spring/summer so you can socialise in style in full comfort mode.
The ultimate fashion accessory
And remember, the must-have fashion accessory is still a face mask. Whether you go for a matching mask or a suitably subtle number, keeping others safe is always on-trend. When the time comes to finally ditch those masks (or up-cycle them into a new fashion accessory), we can all sing in celebration together.
