Popular trends for late summer

There’s still plenty of sunshine left this year to start showing off sartorial summer style. Switching our lockdown outfits of cotton soft PJ’s and cashmere loungewear for 2020 trends we can finally wear outside has never been so appealing. Some of this year’s freshest fashion styles can be worn whilst the sun still shines and then used with added layers for when autumn arrives. Here’s a peek at what you should be filling your wardrobe with right now.

1.) Square toe quilted mules

One of the must-have pieces of the season is the ladylike but punchy square toe quilted mule. A popular style thanks to Bottega Veneta who switched up the mule silhouette and gave it a modern feel, chic sculptural footwear has been paraded by models on the catwalk ever since. Key design features include buttery soft leather, kitten heels and decadent quilted textures. Both tan and monochrome palettes are high fashion and work really well with both denim jeans and flirty summer dresses. The square toe shoe trend is here to stay and whilst summer calls for perfectly pedicured feet, come autumn you can switch it up with ankle socks or tights and maxi skirts or tailored trousers.

2.) Bright neon dresses

That beautiful floaty white summer dress you own is never going to go out of fashion. But for summer 2020 things got much brighter with neon colours making their debut on the runway. From Valentino to Victoria Beckham and Christopher Kane to Marni, neon is the star of the show. Bright corals and oranges pop against tanned skin, bright blues and purples flatter fairer skins and hot pinks look exceptional against dark skin. Fluorescent hues can easily be worn in the autumn too by trying an acid hued faux leather jacket thrown over a long dress or a textured neon knit paired with denim jeans.

3.) Chic city shorts

We might have been out of the office for a few months but that doesn’t mean tailoring is off the agenda. City shorts rule the catwalk for August 2020 and are one of the summer’s most popular trends. Well cut and stopping just above the knee, they look fantastic paired with skyscraper heels, crisp white shirts and bandeau tops. Chic city shorts for summer are the perfect combination of boyish charm and grown-up elegance. A versatile summer separate, wear them with a blazer and waistcoat at more plush events and with sneakers and a t-shirt for weekend barbecues.

4.) Give it some puff

The summer version of the puff sleeve is as pretty as a picture and as voluminous as we want our hair to be. Designers Zimmermann and Huishan Zhang have embraced the trend this season with romantic pieces and statement balloon sleeves. Breathable, lightweight and airy fabrics are perfect for the warmer months and the puff sleeve trend works just as well on shirts as it does mini and maxi dresses. For summer, choose floral prints and peplum styles in silk and chiffon fabrics. The puff sleeve will also take you into autumn, as it jumps onto the gothic trend. As the weather changes, look out for dark lace and thicker fabrics and accessorise with statement earrings and stud embellished belts.

5.) Baby doll dresses

A super stylish summer calls for a richly textured baby doll dress. The voluminous cut of baby dolls lends itself to sunny days and is a street style must-have this season. Pair with flat biker boots to give your dress that extra edge and wear with those on-point square toe mules to up the elegance come evening. Chic, dreamy and breezy, this is the kind of dress that will take you through to autumn when paired with knitted tights and over the knee boots.

6.) High-shine style

Summer metallics in minimalistic silhouettes are both iridescent and effortless. The key to pulling off the high-shine look is to look at the colour of the veins on your wrist and work out whether you have a warm or cool skin tone. If the veins are more green than blue then you have a warm skin tone, and if they are bluer than green then you have a cool skin tone. Warm skin tones look stunning wearing bronze, gold and rose gold metallics whilst cool skin tones look incredible in silver and gunmetal greys. This summer at Saint Laurent, models were dripping in gold harem pants and at Helmut Lang, metallic silver tank tops and matching pants ruled the runway. Pair metallic skirts with simple t-shirts for shimmering summer style or go for bold accents like a metallic shoe or a high shine jacket.
