6 top spring/summer 2021 fashion trends
The world’s fashion houses haven’t stopped creating and as the prospect of a sort-of normal summer awaits us, the newest trends for spring/summer 2021 have already begun to make a splash. These popular styles have wandered straight off the catwalk and into shops, just in time for the weather to get warmer and everyone to start heading outside again. Here are some of the top fashion trends to look out for this spring and summer.
Crop tops
A staple of millennial and Gen Z fashion, the crop top has seen something of a resurgence on the catwalks of major designers like Chanel, Isabel Marant and Dior. Given something of a couture upgrade, crop tops are being styled with leather or denim jackets for a casual look, while bandeau style crop tops are being layered under tailored jackets and blazers for a summer party or cocktail evening. You can even add a touch of glamour to a simple crop top with extra embellishments, like jewellery, puffed sleeves and peek-a-boo dresses.
Short shorts
We’re heading back to the trend that made everyone’s booty’s look brilliant in the 50s; short shorts! More specifically, high waisted shorts that flatter the butt and curves of your body. Whether you’re a classic denim lover or want something with a bit more print and pizzazz, Miu Miu and Dior have both debuted short short looks on the catwalks for spring/summer 2021. Fair warning, these shorts are noticeably short; they’ll make your legs look amazing, but be prepared for some interesting tan lines after a day in the sun!
Puffy sleeves
As awards season gets off to something of a flying start, you’re going to see puffy sleeves EVERYWHERE. The same way that opera gloves made a splash thanks to celebrity fans like Margot Robbie and Ariana Grande, puffy sleeves on glamorous gowns can cause quite the stir at big Hollywood events. Think Viola Davis at the Golden Globes, The Crown’s Emma Corrin on The Graham Norton Show or Regina King and Daisy Edgar-Jones at the Critics Choice Awards.
This is not a look for the faint-hearted, but thankfully you can use it in casual wear and evening wear. Spruce up an ordinary high-neck blouse with statement puffed sleeves, paired with cigarette pants or a pencil skirt. As famous faces have proved, there’s no limit to what you can do with sleeves like this; pair with a figure-hugging bodycon dress or go full voluminous ball-gown and channel designers Gabriela Hearst or Alberta Ferretti.
Glitter
Yes, everyone, we’re going full glitter and glam this spring/summer. And why not? Though designers like Paco Rabanne and Louis Vuitton have shown collections of overwhelming glitter (full glitter suit anybody?), on the high street, you’re more likely to find standout pieces paired with casual, minimalist bases. Add a glittery peplum top or cut-out piece with a black blazer and cigarette pants for a splash of colour and glitz against a cool background. If you’re looking for some more formal inspiration, look no further than the stars out in full force at the Golden Globes; Regina King, Susan Kelechi Watson and Amy Poehler all took glitter and colour to a whole new level!

Pink, pink, pink
Pink seems to be the colour of the season and designers have made sure to show it off in every aspect of their new collections. Word around town was that designers wanted to bring a sense of joy and optimism into their clothing; a hopefulness for the months that lay ahead. And this came through bright colours, vibrant patterns and designs – and a heck of a lot of pink. Whether you prefer fuchsia to magenta, carnation to ruby, there’s plenty of shades and designs to pick from. Try a long, flowing maxi dress for summer cool or invest in a statement pink suit to liven up your work from home outfit.
Face masks
Designers have hopped onto the train long used by female politicians and celebrities alike and are designing face masks to match their clothing. Now that all of us will be using some form of face mask for at least the rest of 2021, making them fashionable and interesting to look at will have people flocking to buy them and model them for the local supermarket. Match colours and fabrics with your chosen outfit for a put-together look that feels professional AND safe. Make sure, however, that the mask is doing its job and keeping you safe.
